you should always state what error you are getting. First see if  
postgresql data directory is there. It should be in /var/lib/pgsql/data

to start postgresql you have to do it as user 'postgres'. Hence you  
require the root password. If you have the root password, first type
su <enter>
rootpassword <enter>
su postgres <enter>
pg_ctl -D /var/lib/pgsql/data start <enter>

post any error messages that come
