  KRec (KDEMultimedia)  is a good option for recording .But it does not
have the many features that Audacity has....The documentation of Krec
covers most of what one should know , to use it.

  hmm.. i used to have similar problems with audacity. Later realised
that it couldn't start up properly  whenever some daemon was running in
the background (like artsd or esd ). I killed those and it worked
perfectly.
