You should have the IP address got from the ADSL modem
dhcp server.  Have you installed the dhcp-client package?

What is the distribution of your GNU/Linux OS?  Is it Redhat
or Debian/Knoppix/Ubuntu?

dpkg -l dhcp-client

and a line like this in your /etc/network/interfaces file

iface eth0 inet dhcp

Restart the networking services.
