I can say in short,
  "LFS - Waste of Time"

LFS gives an idea of core packages of linux and good exposure to linux
administration. But learning linux administration in LFS way was horrible.

  I tried LFS and cannot complete it fully in time to get a more customized
distro.

  If u want an LFS for sure, follow ALFS instead.

My suggestion to get a custom set of packages with custom kernel is to use
"Gentoo Linux".
