[PLUG] ubuntu loading error : only one processor found!

hello all,
i have been trying solve a problem that i have been facing while
trying to install unbuntu on my computer but i keep on getting the
error "only one processor found" and the machine hangs.
i have tried passing kernel parameters such as 'failsafe' which would
do almost zero hardware detection while loading but still end up with
a hanged machine.
configuration:
amd athelon 64bit 1.8 ghz(uni core)
seagate sata hard disk
If anyone's ever faced thid problem and has an answer to the query
please do let me know.
