What does top say?  In my case, spamassasin (invoked by KMail) turned 
out to be the CPU hog.  I put a nice value on the SPAM filter which 
reduced the "hogging" a bit.  

What is the clock speed of your CPU? I would also suggest adding more 
RAM, rather than buying new hardware.
