Ubuntu is not able to set the X Window environment properly.  I have
had similar problems with Ubuntu 9.10 on my Aspire 5542.   I had
similar problems with Mandriva - defaulted to CLI login screen.

In my case, openSUSE 11.2 is the only distro that I was able to
install properly.
