[PLUG] Can I get these Linux capabilities on Android?

I too prefer this. But no ssh. You shoud look at AirDroid Android App.
You "interface" to the mobile phone via browser. Android runs a webserver.
So Wireless LAN is all you need.
It is definitely useful for copying files to/from, multimedia, Check
reply/SMS etc. from your laptop.

About other requirements :
I had tried "shell" and "vi" on my Nokia 5800XM once. It is Symbian S50V5
ful touch screen device.
What I ended up realizing is although it is "cool" to be able to ssh/vi on
your phone, the phone form factor isn't suitable for such things (other
than in emergencies)

Problems I noticed :

   - Screen too small, part of which is "eaten" by virtual keyboard.
   - No special keys like "escape" - used a LOT with vi.  I doubt standard
   Android keyboard has Ctrl key used a LOT with emacs.

I suggestion(s) :

   - Go for as big screen your budget allows. 7" tablet may be best (But it
   has other portability issues - Your budget/your choice)
   - If you seriously plan to use Android Term, I suggest you research
   bluetooth physical keyboard.
   - Some Galaxy Model (not mentioned by you) has a physical pullout
   keyboard. See if that model is available. It might be next best thing after
   BT kbd.

What you are trying to do is interesting. I would be interested in knowing
the outcome.
