I always flash the firmware/kernel directly from my PC using heimdall,
which is open source cross platform tool for flashing firmware to
Samsung S series android devices.
I haven't tried lately as i prefer to directly flash firmware but
earlier on my SGS, I had used z-root which I could install from market
and just click on root to root the phone.
