I have used testdisk to do the above. No doubt, it is a very
powerful tool but it cannot do magic. Files overwritten by a Linux
installation on newly formatted ext3/4 partition may not be
recoverable. From the OP, I believe this is what has happened.

Please share your scenario detail.
It would help recover files from a 1TB clobbered ext4 file system, I
posted for help in the Chennai ILUG mailing list.
