This took me back to ages when I had asked a similar question. I had
used Sylpheed, did'nt work out of the box with gmail, had to recompile
with ssl enabled. But I am sure that is there by default.
There is another client called *Claws Mail* not sure if it is a fork
of *Sylpheed*, but is supposed to have better functionality and
plugins.
