A huge thanks to Amey for sharing the list of steps here.

Matrix was built as a federated service, which means anyone can host
their own server and yet stay connected to the whole world. The default
server provided by https://riot.im is the matrix.org server. If everyone
starts registering on the same server, there's no point to the
federation. Unfortunately, that has been the case so far and matrix.org
has grown exponentially. This also have an adverse effect on the
complete ecosystem of the project. I'd suggest people to use an
alternative server to register a Matrix account. There are tons of other
servers available.

You can find the status of all available Matrix servers on this website:

https://the-federation.info/matrix%7Csynapse

Note: Make sure you choose a server that runs a version of Matrix >=
1.0.0 so that you don't miss out on the latest features and security
fixes. Servers running a version older than that should not be preferred.

**Another note:**

If you are looking for a friendly Matrix server hosted / managed by the
wonderful people from various free software communities in India, you
have two options:

1. https://diasp.in
2. https://poddery.com

I'd encourage pluggies to choose the servers hosted / managed by our own
communities but as always, you're free to choose your own poison. :)

Looking forward to more folks joining at #pluggies !

Cheers!
