I'm not sure whether this would solve your problem, but since it solve it
for me let me share anyway.

Often it's about letting the system know which mic to use, the default
being the builtin mic. What works for me is the following:

- Connect (pair etc.) your mic (hope this step works already, else nothing
  would work further. If you have a problem at this stage itself, please
  describe whatever you tried for this.)

- Launch tool pavucontrol-qt (I launch it using command line though it
  would also be available through settings etc.)

- Click on the Input Devices tab

- There will be a 'Port' drop down where you should see the external mic.
  Select that.
