My experience with NetworkManager is bad. I usually don't install it or
uninstall completely if installed.

Have you tried iwconfig?

Also, some wirerless devices require a firmware upgrade which should
usually be available as an rpm. (dmesg / log should indicate whether it
was firmware issue.)
