Sure.
This was my 5th consecutive in-person attendance at openSUSE conference.
Thanks to openSUSE's 'Travel Support Program'.
openSUSE Linux isn't that famous in India compare to other Linux
distro's like UBUNTU,Fedora,Debian & other.
I worked in telecom domain for long time & I kept doing R&D about
which is the best compatible open source distro to push in to
proprietary software world in telecom domain. [ OSS/BSS both]
Integration of proprietary software's with open source platform is
always challenging in corporate world. [Specially in prod env.]
openSUSE gave me much flexibility in this matter & I continued
using, promoting & marketing openSUSE. [ For example integration of
Microsoft products inc Active Directory,Microsoft Exchange, Office 365
at some extent,Cisco VPN technologies,SAP & etc]
openSUSE introduced TSP back in 2012 for 1st time when I applied for
the same. [ TSP = Travel Support Program ]
Just to give a quick hint how TSP works = They evaluate our overall
contribution to the project & they decide TSP grant.
Same applies to Debian Conference. So it's not a free trip.
Contribution has to be visible.
I am not a programmer or hard core developer.
So, don't think that only developers & coders get travel support
sponsorship at such open source conferences overseas.
Now let me jump to the openSUSE conference briefing.
What happens there? What kind of people attend openSUSE conference?
What sessions openSUSE conference has? Do they take interview of
contributor to validate there skillets or asks tons of questions?
Asian contributors being shy, worry exists in mind although we carry
same level of expertise as contributors from Europe,North
America,Australia etc.
Here are some quick answers = openSUSE is a open source community
based project & SUSE is always the main sponsor of oSC. Conference
length is 5 days. You can expect reasonable SUSE employees at oSC's
who are also part of openSUSE community & individual contributors.
Sessions are focused on topics related to openSUSE project, Libre
Office & variety of other open source technologies. openSUSE is a
community project so on 1 has to get involved himself. No1 going to
ask any tough interview like questions during the conference. Not even
openSUSE board members. It's perfectly ok to have a chit chat with
board members, core developers etc without any hesitation. And also
there is a live project meeting in each oSC where contributors can
give suggestions, ideas, complaints etc. There is also live streaming of
oSC's & recorded sessions are available at opensusetv YouTube channel.
Apart of technical talks, there are fun activities as well. This year
at oSC there was SUSE band, beer garden with openSUSE beer, sponsored
food by various sponsors.. Last year there were retro games for free,
sponsored food, below 10Euro in house accommodation & much more. And
yes person in blazer, shirt, office shoes is a odd man out at oSC's. ;-)
There are few number of attendees from India at oSC till date. We were
2~3 people from India who used to attend oSC. This year it was just me
from India. Few folks from SUSE lab's Beijing & Taipei office were
present.
Usually where openSUSE conference helds at? =
i) 2012 oSC was at Czech technical university in Prague , Czech
Republic / Group photo =

So yes openSUSE conference host cities are within Europe always.
3 years back openSUSE started hosting 'openSUSE Asia' summit which
till date got tremendous response.
1st oSC was in Bejing, last year it was at Taipei & this year openSUSE
Asia summit is at Yogyakarta, Indonesia in November month.
cFP is still open. If you want to give talks on any open source
technology topics you can submit your talks.
Entry to openSUSE conference & openSUSE Asia summit remains FREE of charge. ^_^
Feel free to throw in any queries related to openSUSE.
I'll try to answer.
Else you can always join opensuse-project mailing list to get answers. :-)
Lastly I wont forget to mention, I learnt Linux from fellow PLUGies
back in 2003~2004.
And that's how I started joining/contributing to various open source
technology user groups/communities.
I always promote PLUG at open source conferences overseas. [inc GNUnify event]
Most FOSS enthusiasts/developers from Europe are still under
impression that Bangalore & South Indian cities are hub of open source
technology enthusiasts for India region.
Regards,
Amey.
